@Denise: We get both good and bad wind here. There is an effect here called a Chinook; when warm moist air from the Pacific comes across the mountains it dumps the moisture in the form of snow, what's left is warm dry air and it then blows through Calgary. Sometime we can see temperatures rise by 30 degrees Celsius in a couple of hours. That was the kind of wind I was dealing with (although not quite as warm). The other, of course, is the north wind from the arctic and I tend to stay inside for those winds. I don't envy the cold, moist storms that you get in the N.E. US.
